Sri Lanka has been famous for gemstones from the earliest times. It is an important export trade today many areas in the sabaragamuwa province are well known for gems. Ratnapura is the most important region for gems Ratnapura means the City of Gems. It has gem museums displaying the wide range of gems available in the country. The Blue Sapphire is the king of Sri Lankan gems The 400 carat blue sapphire called the Blue Bell which adorns the British crown is from Sri Lanka Rubies cat s eyes alexandrite aquamarines tourmalines spinals topazes garnets and amethysts are some of the precious stones found in Sri Lanka.
The cutting of gems is a specialize job Gems are cut and polished
Before they are set Different regions in the country haw different ways of making jeweler Gems are generally worn for their beauty people also deli eve that gems have the power to bring luck.
The craft was handed down from father to son now women too work in the gem trade.

SIGIRIYA

Sigiriya is a rock fortress.king kasyapa;the creator of sigiriya was a king with an artistic soul.He modelled his palace and the city on the mythical abode of kuvera’ the god of wealth.kasyapa gave form to his dreams in building this citadel .The name sigiriga has many explanations.The most popular translates ‘giriya’as throat’as it is through the throat ot a crouching lion that one passea on one’ s way to the summit.on the westerm and northern side is a gallerg with a polished well.Even today ‘after fifteen centuries of exposure to sun ‘wind and rain’one can see one ‘s reflection on it.is named the ‘mirror wall ‘on the polished surface are the Sigieiya Graffiti writings 0f visitors to the rock perhaps the writers were inspired by the frescoes of the famous Sigiriya maidens which are on the western face of the Sigiriya rock.There is evidence that there 500portraits of the maidens but only 19 remain today.The summit of the rock is nearly 300 acres in extent.It has pleasure gardens’full of ponde islets and pavilions.Sigiriya provides an example of one of the oldest landscape gardens of the world.all these features make Sigiriya animpressively planned city of ancient times.

My village is Batuwangala It is in Gall District. It’s 70 kilometers away from gall town. There are tea estates and hills in my village there are about 300 villagers in it Ginganga flows thought my villagers are framers. some of them are small tea holders. all of them are Buddhist .the famous sinharaja forest is cloes my village. There is a water fall. Its name is Duli ella. There is a temple school and post office we live happily in the village. I love my village.

I am Madushika Harshani. i study at G/Batuwangala maha vidyalaya. i am learning of Grade 11.Ilive in Batuwangala, Neluwa , Galle. My target is to pas the 2008 O/L exam.I have one brother and  one sister. My mother’s name is Mrs.Danawathi. she is a very kind hearted Lady. she is a house  wife. My father is Mr. Hemasiri Jayantha. He is a blacksmith. He is an innocent villager. I love my parents. My favorite subject is Sinhala. My school is near the sinharaja rain forest. There is a water fall called “Duuliella”. it’s very beautyfull. I like to eat mangoes.My birth day is 1992.08.08. I am still learning English.I am 16 yers old.I like to swim in ‘Gingaga’.I want to be a Nurse one day.
